Red Tees August 2024

Good afternoon fellow golfers,

Another month has come to an end with some wild weather impacting at times on our golf schedule. Last Tuesday saw us called off the course due to dangerous conditions, many thanks to Tim for braving the elements to call us all in. The rumor circulating that the Women’s Captain bribed the ProShop to call the competition off because she was having a diabolical day is simply not true, tempting as the thought was!

We managed to catch up on the Monthly Medal schedule, with the July medal played on 6 August and the August medal contested on 20 August. The Royal Hobart Cup was played on 25 August in again quite trying conditions. Debbie Taylor and Fflur Higgs took on the 36 Hole event, with Debbie winning the Nett Womens event. We also had three juniors compete in the Girls Royal Hobart Cup, congratulations to Audrey Long for winning this event.

The Finlay Bowl came to an end on 26 August with Cathy Headley playing Jayne Ramsay in the final. Cathy managed to beat Jayne in a very closely fought match with the final score 1up. Well done to Cathy in particular as this was her first ever match play event, she got through the first two rounds with walkovers, a definite starter to play Pennant for Royal!

The September Monthly Medal will be played on 10 September, with only limited opportunities now to qualify for the coveted Medalist of the year.

On 11 September we be having a morning tea at the clubhouse from 10am.  It is an opportunity to meet some of our past players, new players, and just enjoy a cuppa together, the cost is $8 for morning tea with an additional charge for barista coffee. Please let Susan Walker know at swwalker@ozemail.com.au if you are attending so we can cater accordingly.

On 17 September we are hosting our annual Guest Day. There are still places available for this event so please support it by playing and inviting guests from other clubs if you would like to. Entry is via the Pro Shop not online as usual, the cost is $27 for golf and lunch, with a 9am shotgun start on the day.

The club is hosting a GIRLS NIGHT IN on Saturday 21 September. The evening is raising funds for the Cancer Council Tasmania. The cost of $50 per person will include share platters at each table, a complimentary cocktail on arrival, quizzes, live music, auction items and a guest speaker. I’m sure there are not many of us who have not been touched by this disease in one way or another, so let’s get together and be part of the fund raising.

The Finlay Bowl winner for 2024, Cathy Headley.

Congratulations to all the winners in August 2024.

Yes I know I’ve mentioned this once or twice before, but please rake bunkers as you leave them, it’s not that difficult and it makes playing more enjoyable for those behind you. This was last Tuesday before the owner the ball circled in red had even set foot in the bunker!

Details of any upcoming events at other clubs may be found on the noticeboard in the locker room. There are a couple of competitions coming up including the Spring Tournament at NW Bay on 10 September and the Spring Fling on 16 October at Geeveston.

Finally, the pace of play is once again beginning to slow down, remember to keep behind the group in front and ahead of the group behind!

Happy Golfing,

Kate Gilmore
