Course Report

SUPER REPORT

March 16, 2025

I am pleased to present my first report on the current status and ongoing efforts to maintain and improve Royal Hobart Golf Club. This report aims to provide an overview of key operational areas, including turf management, course aesthetics, and sustainability initiatives, as well as any other upcoming course works.

Staffing changes

I would like to take the opportunity to announce the departure of Nigel Shaw, who has left the green staff crew after a combined 20 years at Royal Hobart Golf Club. As you know Nigel has been an integral part of the team in that time and has contributed greatly to the presentation and playability of the course and overall experience of our members. I thank Nigel for his service to the club and wish him well for the future.

Greens

Greens received a light renovation on Monday the 24th of February, this included a double Verti-cut in two directions to reduce organic matter and thin out lateral growth, this also provides a smoother putting surface. This was then followed by an eight-millimeter solid tine to relieve compaction and improve water infiltration. All greens received a light dusting of sand to fill in all grooves and holes. This provided minimal disruption to play, and the process was unnoticed by weeks end.

All greens have now received their renovation application of nutrition to aid in recovery from the stress of the practices mentioned above.

Over the coming weeks the team will continue light Verti-cutting and dusting of the greens to aim for improved trueness and firmness of putting surfaces.

Tees and surrounds

Tees and surrounds are currently getting cut twice a week at 12mm. These areas will also be renovated with a solid tine and Verti-cut over the coming weeks.

Fairways

Fairways are now getting cut twice a week at 14mm in a 50/50 mowing pattern. The team are currently in the process of Verti-draining complete fairways with a 14mm solid tine to aid in water infiltration, compaction and enhancing oxygen flow.

Roughs

Roughs are getting cut once a week with 2-4 cleanup laps performed later each week.

Bunkers

Bunkers are raked by hand and with the machine twice a week all walls are smoothed during raking also.

The team are working hard to restore bunker playability by pulling down sand from walls due to wind blow and shot splash, they are then levelling base.

Practice Tee and hole

These areas are cut twice a week and divoted with sand and seed weekly.
